Handpainted papier mache lacquer humidor depicting the process of tobacco manufacturing circa 1870 in Japan. Tobacco had been introduced to Japan about 10 years earlier, a precious commodity few could afford. Note the whiteness of the figures which was achieved with the use of ground up shell material. The knobbed inside the lid kept the tobacco compressed and moist. Japan, Circa 1870. Very rare.
